Non-Destructive Testing

Investigation Without Compromising Structural Integrity

Non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques investigate structural conditions and material properties without removing samples or damaging existing construction. NDT is deployed where invasive testing would damage heritage fabric, where access for sampling is limited, or where comprehensive mapping of internal conditions is required.

Technology enables assessment of reinforcement location, material thickness, deterioration extent, moisture presence, and structural integrity through surface measurements and wave propagation analysis. Results guide targeted destructive testing where laboratory verification is necessary.

NDT Capabilities:

  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) locating reinforcement and detecting voids, delamination, or material discontinuities
  • Ferroscan electromagnetic scanning mapping reinforcement depth, diameter, and spacing
  • Ultrasonic pulse velocity testing measuring concrete quality and detecting internal cracking
  • Schmidt Hammer rebound testing estimating concrete surface hardness and strength
  • Covermeter surveys measuring concrete cover to reinforcement
  • Infrared thermography detecting delamination, moisture intrusion, and thermal anomalies
  • Half-cell potential mapping assessing corrosion probability in reinforced concrete

12 Creek Street NDT Campaign: External wall investigation of 42-year-old commercial building utilized GPR for reinforcement mapping, Ferroscan for cover measurement, and Schmidt Hammer for strength estimation across facade. NDT results guided targeted core locations for laboratory verification. Combined NDT and material testing documented actual conditions, enabling capacity assessment demonstrating structure retained adequate performance without major remediation. Protective coating renewal recommended in lieu of structural replacement.

NDT results integrate with visual inspection and structural analysis, providing comprehensive understanding of conditions without extensive invasive testing. For aged concrete structures, NDT maps deterioration extent and locates reinforcement where drawings are unavailable or inaccurate.

During remediation construction, NDT verifies material placement, confirms repair effectiveness, and ensures quality without destructive verification that would damage completed work. Technology provides quality assurance throughout construction phase.

TRSC operates calibrated NDT equipment with results interpreted by structural engineers understanding capabilities and limitations of each technique. NDT data is retained for future reference, enabling change detection and ongoing condition monitoring.
