Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3

TRSC anchor pull testing for John Holland on the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 project — Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads. OPUS programme 001.

Building Background

Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 is the largest transport infrastructure project ever undertaken on the Gold Coast and the second southern extension of the existing Gold Coast Light Rail (G:link) network. Stage 3 extends the light rail network 6.7 km from Broadbeach South station to Burleigh Heads, primarily along the centre of the Gold Coast Highway corridor, and includes eight new stations, the procurement of five additional light rail vehicles (LRVs), expansion of the existing depot and stabling facilities, new light rail-bus interchanges at Burleigh Heads and Miami, signalised traffic intersection upgrades, new signalised pedestrian crossings, and upgraded pedestrian and cycle facilities. The project is delivered by GoldlinQ as operator with John Holland as design and construct contractor, with funding committed by the Australian Government, the Queensland Government and the City of Gold Coast (announced November 2019). The project is supported by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads as asset owner. Construction support included more than 760 jobs across the build period. The first tram travelled the new northern section in November 2025; testing and commissioning Phase 1 (northern section to Miami North station) completed prior to March 2026, with Phase 2 covering full alignment testing from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads currently underway. Overhead line equipment energisation at 750 V was completed in late April 2026, coinciding with the first tram running into Burleigh Heads on 29 April 2026. Passenger services are scheduled to commence in mid-2026. Once complete the network will extend 27 km from Helensvale to Burleigh Heads with 23 trams in operation.

TRSC Engagement Summary

TRSC's anchor testing engagements on the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 (GCLR Stage 3) project are recorded under OPUS programme 001, the practice's umbrella anchor testing programme. The OPUS project record names a series of related GCLR engagements: Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 Anchor Testing, GCLR-S3 Anchor Testing, GCLR-S3 Anchor Testing - Phase 2, and Goldcoast Light Rail Stage 3, John Holland — together comprising the full sequence of TRSC anchor pull testing engagements on this major infrastructure project. Anchor testing on a light rail project supports verification of post-installed anchorage capacity for overhead line equipment (OLE) poles, cantilever arms, traction power substation equipment, signalling and communications infrastructure, platform canopy steelwork, and station fit-out elements that interface with the concrete structures of the trackform, platforms and station buildings. Pull testing is performed in accordance with AS 5216-2021 (Design of post-installed and cast-in fastenings in concrete) and ETAG 001 / EAD 330232-00-0601 product qualification protocols, with the recorded ultimate load and characteristic resistance compared against the design action effects derived from the relevant railway engineering loading code. Programme 001 is recorded with stage history of Archived and To Be Invoiced and active OPUS status, reflecting the rolling phased nature of the project. The principal contractor for GCLR Stage 3 is John Holland under appointment from operator GoldlinQ.
